Carter Caves

We had an awesome weekend camping at Carter Caves with Derek and Jeannine! Lots of fun, and I actually felt like a real camper (by comparison, anyway). Lots of "squatters" around us at the campsite -- the type of people who utilize the state park system, but aren't by definition "camping". We listened as one group watched DVDs late into the night (I'm seriously convinced that fewer and fewer kids have the opporutnity to develop an imagination anymore). Funny thing was, they asked us for a jump the next morning because the DVD player drained their car battery. :D Another group of squatters patroled the perimeter of the area for skunks with what we believe was a halogen light -- nothing that would make the little critters feel threatened! :) When I don't even care about the critters wandering the campsite, I don't think anyone else has an excuse. (Last year at Taylorsville, I was on guard for at least an hour after a run-in with a raccoon.) And then there were the drunks who shouted obscenities into the night -- right in front of the park ranger! There was no evidence of them by the time we woke up the next morning.

The caves were incredible...I can't wait to print my photos. (I used up my entire memory card!) We were attacked by a bat in the X-cave, encountered cave crickets, cave spiders, and salamanders in the cascade cave, and explored (not just walked) some awesome trails!
